Job Opportunity: Master's Position in Livestock Grazing Effects on Sage-Grouse Space Use
The Picardi Lab in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences at the University of Idaho is seeking a motivated Master's student to conduct research on the effects of livestock grazing on greater sage-grouse space use. Position Description:
As a Master's student in the Picardi Lab, you will research the potential for livestock grazing to be reconciled with conservation and enhance wildlife habitat, specifically focusing on greater sage-grouse space use. Through analyzing sage-grouse movements in a landscape of rotational grazing, you will evaluate the relationships between livestock and sage-grouse. Fieldwork will take place at Rinker Rock Creek Ranch, a research station managed in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and Wood River Land Trust.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and execute field data collection and sage-grouse captures
- Compile grazing schedules and manage movement data from GPS tags
- Analyze sage-grouse movements and habitat selection using advanced quantitative tools
- Communicate research results through scientific paper publications and public presentations
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in wildlife, biology, ecology, or a related field
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Valid U.S. driver's license
Preferred:
- Experience with capturing upland game birds
- Proficiency in driving ATVs or other off-road vehicles
- Familiarity with programming in R
