PhD Position Available

Smart Transportation Lab, McGill University

The Smart Transportation Lab at McGill University has two PhD positions opening for 2024 Fall and 2025 Winter.

The position involves research in developing probabilistic machine learning frameworks to model spatiotemporal urban mobility/traffic data, such as spatiotemporal traffic sensing data and passenger demand data. In particular, we are interested in addressing the large-scale (e.g., thousands of sensors), high-dimensional, incomplete (sparse observations), nonlinear, multi-resolution (short- and long-range), and heterogeneous (distributions beyond Gaussian) properties of emerging mobility and traffic data. Candidates should be able to work independently and are also expected to collaborate with researchers working on artificial intelligence in Montreal.

Good understanding of Bayesian statistics and deep generative models is a plus. If you are interested, please send an email to Dr. Sun (liiun.sun@mcgill.ca) (subject: "Prospective PhD student [Your name]") with your CV and a brief research statement.

About Dr. Sun and Smart Transportation Lab

Dr. Lijun Sun is an Associate Professor and William Dawson Scholar at the Department of Civil Engineering at McGill University. He obtained his PhD degree in Civil Engineering (Transportation) from the National University of Singapore in 2015, and received his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2011.

Prior to joining McGill, he was a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT Media Lab during 2015-2017 and a Senior Researcher at the Future Cities Laboratory, Singapore-ETH Center in 2015. His research focuses on intelligent transportation systems and urban computing, developing innovative methodologies, tools, and applications to address the efficiency, resilience, and sustainability issues in urban transportation systems. He is now leading the smart transportation lab (http://smart.lab.mcgill.ca) at McGill. the current research program of the lab centers on modeling spatiotemporal urban mobility and traffic data, stochastic modeling of human driving behavior, probabilistic time series forecasting, Bayesian statistics, and tensor analysis. He is currently an Associate Editor for Transportation Science and Transportation Research Part C-Emerging Technologies and has served special issue guest editors in other journals in transportation science and technology. Dr. Sun's research has been supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada, the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Nature et technologies (FRQNT), the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et culture (FRQSC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Institut de Valorisation des Données (IVADO), and Mitacs Canada.
