PhD Student Position: Optimal Design of Axial Flux Motors with Recycled Permanent Magnets
Diploma: Master's degree in electromechanical or electrical engineering.
Job Description:
Ghent University, ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide, is seeking a motivated and creative PhD student for a position in the Electrical Energy Laboratory (EELAB). The project is part of the European initiative "Holistic Approach to enhance the Recyclability of rare-earth permanent Magnets Obtained from aNY waste stream" (Harmony).
As a PhD student, your primary focus will be on the optimization of motor designs incorporating recycled rare-earth permanent magnets, specifically NdFeB magnets obtained from End-of-Life (EoL) products. The project aims to develop a closed-loop recycling process for Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from these magnets, commonly used in permanent magnet synchronous machines.
Responsibilities:
1. Contribute to the development of models for axial flux permanent magnet motors.
2. Conduct model-based sensitivity analysis of motor electromagnetic performance considering magnet grade variability.
3. Evaluate performance criteria such as torque, efficiency, and imbalance (eccentricity).
4. Investigate modifications to the motor design for increased robustness against variations in magnet properties.
Contract Details:
- Initial contract duration: 1 year, with the possibility of extension to a total of 4 years based on positive evaluations.
- Competitive salary with additional benefits.
- Work location: Electrical Energy Laboratory, Tech Lane Ghent Science Park, Zwijnaarde.
Job Profile:
- Master's degree in engineering (technology), preferably in electromechanical or electrical engineering.
- Motivated, creative, and passionate about academic research.
- Affinity with both experimental research and simulation software.
- Strong technical knowledge, expertise, and experience in the domain of electric machines.
- Good communication skills in English.
- Enjoys challenging scientific research in a multidisciplinary and international context.
How to Apply:
Interested candidates should send their CV and motivation letter to Mohamed.Ibrahim@UGent.be before February 5, 2024. Please mention "HarmonyStudent" in the subject of the email.
