Please find the following details for two funded PhD positions in optimization and operational research. Selected candidates will be supervised by Drs. John Doucette and Milad Nazarahari (director of IDEA Lab) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta.
Positions: PhD studentship
Position Title: Mine Planning/Operations Optimization. Start Date: Fall 2024
Project Description: In close collaboration with Mining Optimization Laboratory, our research aims to use operations research and advanced analytical methods such as mathematical modeling, optimization, discrete event/continuous simulation, and intelligent agents to arrive optimal or near- optimal solutions to complex, large-scale mine planning/operations decision-making problems.
We strongly believe that promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is the only way to move forward. We strive to build and maintain an equitable, diverse, inclusive, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment where we benefit from a broad spectrum of ideas and experiences. We encourage people with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences to join us, specifically members of underrepresented and disadvantaged groups (e.g., women, Indigenous people, visible minorities, and people with disabilities).
Required Qualifications:
1. MSc degree in Mechanical/Industrial Eng., Operational Research, or Eng. Management.
2. Research experience (coursework, research, and/or industrial): optimization and operational
research.
3. Experience in programming with MATLAB for data analysis/visualization.
4. Proficient in programming with Python, and/or C/C++.
5. Familiar with CPLEX and/or Gurobi Optimizer solvers and AMPL mathematical
programming language
6. Minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 (or equivalent).
7. Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications (these are assets):
1. Experience with discrete-event simulation.
2. Experience in metaheuristic optimization algorithms.
3. Experience in machine learning techniques.
How to Apply: Please submit your application to Dr. Nazarahari via email (nazaraha@ualberta.ca): 1. (Required) Cover letter: a brief statement of your motivation, research interests, & relevant
past experiences (max 1 page).
2. (Required) Academic CV, including a list of publications and relevant experiences.
3. (If available) Transcripts of your previous degrees (pdf file).
4. (If available for international students) English language test results, e.g., TOEFL, IELTS
(pdf file).
5. (If available) Your representative publications (pdf file, max 3 samples).
