PhD Opportunities at North Carolina State University
The Sustainability Analysis and Innovation Lab (SAIL) at the Department of Forest Biomaterials, North Carolina State University, invites applications for multiple fully-funded PhD positions with graduate research assistantships. This comprehensive support covers tuition, stipend, and benefits at the university level. The anticipated commencement is either Fall 2024 or Fall 2025. We seek highly motivated individuals to collaborate in addressing pressing sustainability challenges.
About SAIL
Led by Dr. Kai Lan (visit https://caesarlan1992.wixsite.com/0001 for more information), SAIL pioneers innovative methods and integrated modeling frameworks. Our focus is on evaluating and advancing industrial systems and the built environment concerning sustainable bioenergy and biomaterials. Employing interdisciplinary approaches like industrial ecology, sustainable engineering, and artificial intelligence, SAIL addresses sustainability concerns, particularly in the realms of climate change mitigation and circular economy.
Research Areas
As a graduate student at SAIL, you will have the opportunity to contribute to one or more of the following areas:
- Sustainable energy and materials
- Carbon footprint and climate change mitigation
- Industrial ecology and sustainable engineering, artificial intelligence
- Forest carbon dynamics
- Soil carbon modeling
- Green building
- Upcycling solid waste
- Process design and simulation
- Techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) of emerging technologies
Qualifications
Prospective candidates should possess:
- Educational background in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, material science, biological engineering, or related fields
- Preferred experience in process-based simulation (e.g., Aspen Plus, SuperPro)
- Strong interest in sustainability research
- Enthusiasm for exploring unknown research frontiers
- Excellent academic writing and communication skills
- Preferable prior research experience
